The perfect hot afternoon for a day in the Park, we were treated to another great Angels and Airwaves gig, The Queens of the Stone Age also played and finally Motorhead hit the stage for some serious old style Rock and Roll!
Most importantly the Foo Fighters played in style and gave us (all 85000) a full-blown display of all their biggest hits! 1hr 40 minutes worth…The sheer size of the Hyde Park set-up meant it was nothing like the intimate venues we are accustomed to in the U.K. Most of the gigs we go to are played in the Academy’s around London "old play houses" or small night clubs. We were about 200m from the stage so couldn’t see much but the vibe was definitely good. Friends in the golden circle said it got quite hectic… The lasers were awesome, I haven’t seen a display like that in a while. I definitely want to see them play again but in a smaller venue…

Coins "shrapnel"

I have a bad habit when it comes to coins…I leave them lying around the house. No I’m not an over paid ungrateful sod, I just don’t like coins or carrying them, so when I end up back home after a night out on the beers, I empty my pockets and clutter the counters. Michelle gave me a money tin to put them in. What a great idea, however I decided it would be even better to put only £1 and £2 coins in it. This I have been doing since Christmas and now it’s full.
With the £1 and £2 coin problem solved it seemed that the small change was still annoying Mich, so she got me a money Box in the form of my favourite beer.. Check it out in the photo. I’m still busy filling it up with my left over small change, it’s just past half way.
None the less I have opened the £ tin and counted the dosh… how much do you think I saved?

Angels and Airwaves...

Saw Angles and Airwaves play at Brixton last night. Despite being 45 mins late on stage "due to a technical fault" they were surprisingly good. I didn’t know a single track, yet I managed jam to every one played. They even through in a couple of Blink182 choruses. To those of you who don’t know, Blink182 are on a break, Angles and Airwaves was formed by the lead singer " Tom DeLongue". Same type of music with loads of Blink style to it. They rocked the house with their small catalogue of tracks, definitely worth a listen if you were once or are a Blink fan. I actually remember playing ATARI tv games on something similar as a kid, that’s why it grabbed my attention. We all held expectations for sun, swell and off shore winds. We got the swell and a morning of off shore but no sun, in fact the conditions were miserable all weekend. The broken finger problem meant that my weekend was written off anyway so I wasn’t to fussed, I relaxed and got the London tension out of the system. The surfers got in the sea and persevered, all credit to Lols and Mich for pursuing waves in 12-degree water and howling winds. I spent my time on the beach coaching mates in the art of flying power kites in heavy winds, I must say my kites have saved many a blown out surf trip a great investment and additional hobby.
We hired out a very cool and very well equipped self catering house……… Actually I take that back the spot was missing one essential item, a BRAAI!
In true South African style we had to have a braai albeit without one, we bought 4 disposable BBQ’s (a small A4 sized device made up of baking tray with self lighting coal and a grill) Utterly useless but better than nothing, in the rain, 5 beer fuelled men attempted to cook enough meat for 10 people.
Some Saffas may ask, why surf in England? Well it’s better than nothing and actually very very cool. Woolacombe is a great little surf location with excellent locals a cool town and the potential for great surf.
As usual I had a great trip and can’t wait for the next one, already looking at calendar dates. It’s not exactly J-Bay but it’s good enough and if you are lucky it has the potential to fire.

Hard Fi In operation @ Brixton

5 nights at Brixton academy, all sold out, the first band to do it. What a gig, we were there on the final night (Thursday). They played most of their Stars of CCTV album plus a couple of extras. I enjoyed the concert, I thought they were good and definitely worth the sell out. However some of the group that I was with thought it was average. They are a young band with a very gritty rock sound. They haven't developed that massive stage presence yet, their front man is a seemingly low key individual who would rather deliver a cool performance than wind up the crowd and over perform. The crowd was certainly there and got involved with some of their bigger hits and demanded more at the end. So I wonder what makes a great gig great? Why would I think that the gig was great and def worth another see and others not? Perhaps I am not being critical enough ? Or do I levelexpectations off.. ?All I can say is that nobody can compare a hard-fi gig with an Oasis gig. Yes they might be playing similar music but are completely different bands.

Cycling from London to Paris

This is a charity ride, I'm doing it to raise a bit of cash for action medical research. Physios don't hold back not even when your finger is being held together by wires. Apparently I have not progressed enough on the movement side of things (1 week later). To be honest I thought it was coming along fine. The top knuckle is very stiff and difficult to move. I then spent a morning with the plastic surgeon, she was far more positive about progress and said everything was looking good. Oh and whilst all these assessments were being carried out I got a chance to take another photo, this time of the actual wire work.

Wires should be coming out on the 26th of May, hopefully after that I can get back into the gym for some spinning and light work outs. I need to do some exercise, I'm going insane, literally climbing the walls. I don't want to risk any infection or damage to the healing process, so restricted to long walks, fun but not full filling. At the moment I'm not even supposed to be using the hand, it's one handed typing, cooking, washing. I cant believe how debilitating it is.

Tree Surgery..

Met a couple of friends down at the river for drinks on Friday evening. It was an eventful night. Stopped in at a corner shop to pick up some beers (we were drinking on the cheap) Whilst in there with a mate sorting out drinks for the guys and girls, we witnessed one of the most obvious and blindingly bold shop raids ever... 5 or 6 dudes from the area, baseball cap, hoody ASBO types strolled in and loaded up with wine, beer, vodka right in front of us. Down their trousers, jacket sleeve's and in pockets these guys must have cleaned up of at least £20 worth of booze each. What made it even more amazing was the fact that fridge and shelf area is located right in front of the till where 3 of the shop owners stood serving customers.. Obviously they(the owners)/us weren't going to do anything, it would have just ended in a mess... Oh well, I take it from the way it all worked out the owners are fighting a battle they just cant fight so they ignore...Probably safest. I could go on with some politicall speech about the way this country is going and how the government is to blame blah blah but I wont it's boring and it irritates me big style... enough

So after a couple of cold beers and a sunset we headed off towards a pub.. The Jolly Gardner, on the way I noticed this sign tied to a tree, in my slightly mellow state I found it quite amusing, looking back with a sober mind it's not really.. or is it ? I spent Thursday in Hospital having it worked on. I was supposed to go under General Anesthetic however I opted out as the surgeon thought he had an outside chance of manipulating the broken pieces back into place under a local with out the need for wires and pins. What happened next literally turned my stomach... I lay in theatre with a localized hand, completely numb and devoid of feeling. The surgeon did his best, felt like my wrist was being pulled off, it didn’t work, he decided it needed pinning. Next thing I know he's scrubbed up and surgery has started, I am still wide awake waiting for the anesthetist. I ask "you doing this under local too..?" surgeon replies, "yeah, can you feel it?" I actually couldn’t so replied no and he carried on. The cool thing about being under local was that I didn’t have to suffer the after effects of a general, on the flip side I got to listen to and watch the entire procedure, OK I didn't watch; the sound of drilling and so forth was not good. End result 2 pins and 2 wires to hold it all in place. I'm out of sport for the next 3 weeks, so no training..... Once the local had worn off I got to experience the true effect of the procedure, extreme pain. 2 days, loads of sleep and plenty of pain killers and things seem to be leveling off.. Check out the cool protector/splint I get to wear. Note to self, don’t break anything else, it's just way to much admin..

Mountain Biking in the Forest....

So if you have checked in to catch up on the training schedule for the London 2 Paris, something rather annoying happened last weekend. I should have been a little less adventurous considering it was the 1st trip out this year...But bravado took over and I attempted to jump a ditch at the bottom of a hill, it all ended right there. Actually it didn't, my girlfriend and best mate fell over laughing, told me to get up and carry on... I did for another 2hrs. Eppingham Forest rocks, great trails and cool locals.
